Review: Tarte Tarteist Lash Paint Mascara

img_4527

I initially received a sample size of this mascara at¬†Sephora (100 Point Reward). I used up the sample in less than two weeks and rushed to my nearest Sephora to grab a full-size, only to learn that the store that I had visited was sold out ūüėď I immediately went on the Tarte website and to my surprise, there was a sale on ūüėć So, I bought two Tarteist Lash Paint Mascaras, without any hesitation, and this is why ūüėÄ

I will begin by stating that I already have quite thick, dark and volumous curly lashes, so my purpose, with regards to using mascara, is to add more drama, length and volume as well as for lash separation. After applying one coat of this mascara, my lashes were instantly thicker, longer and more defined (in that there was more curl). However, this mascara, true to its name, has a paint-like consistency – it’ s thick!!! and takes longer than any other mascara I have ever used before to dry. While the mascara dries, it is crucial¬†not to let your lashes touch your lids (especially if you have eyeshadow on!), as colour transfer is bound to happen and this product isn’t so simple to remove once it touches¬†skin! I had to wait about 3 minutes before applying my second coat and thats when I really fell in love because I usually need at least 3 coats of mascara to achieve the look I go¬†for and managed to get it in just 2¬†coats with Tarteist Lash Paint Mascara.¬†Here is a picture of what my lashes looked like after two coats.

fullsizerender-2

I find I get better results when I apply this mascara after I have primed my eyelids and applied eyeshadow (I think the color that falls off and settles onto my lashes helps to build up the volume of the mascara).

This mascara stays put on my lashes for about 8-10¬†hours before I notice particles of it on my face. It seems fairly easy to remove with a (preferably, an oil-based) face wash/cleanser, although I have struggled to find a makeup remover that can get rid of ALL¬†traces of this mascara. Despite removing my makeup with built for make-up wipes, and washing and toning my face at night, some mornings,¬†I still wake up with black crud in my eyes and on random parts of my face ūüė¨

Nonetheless, Tarte has outdone itself with this mascara which Tarte claims on its website is vegan friendly as well as safe for contact lens wearers.

Review: Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Drink of H20 Hydrating Boost

h202.jpg

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Drink of H20 Hydrating Boost ($47 CDN) is a new lightweight gel facial moisturizer that is water-based, packed with marine antioxidants as well as free of phthalates, mineral oil, sodium lauryl sulfates, gluten and parabens!!!

The first time I tried a gel moisturizer was two years ago when I was in Hong Kong. I remember being enthralled¬†with the rose scent and wishing ¬†thatI could have re-purchased the product when it finally finished, but I was NOT willing to pay exorbitant customs charges and could not find a local supplier ‚ėĻ

A few weeks back, when I saw an advertisement for Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Drink of H20 Hydrating Boost on the Tarte website, I was hyped to learn it would be available in the Canadian market soon, because I couldn’t wait to test out this gel moisturizer.  Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Drink of H20 Hydrating Boost was released alongside a line of other skincare (including SPF and a cleansing gel) as well as make-up products and brushes. The packaging for these items is super cute Рgold embossing on turquoise, pink and purple!

The moisturizer comes in a jar, which I prefer, since I can use as much as I need. However, be mindful not to leave lidded products open for too long as this usually compromises on their quality. The moisturizer is thick, clear and has a strong floral (lavender) fragrance.

Once I applied the gel onto my freshly washed and toned face, I noticed that it felt very refreshing and hydrating. It also absorbed quickly and easily into my skin.

I had no issues applying my regular makeup routine on top of this moisturizer although I did find that I looked ‚Äúshinier‚ÄĚ (the moisturizer I was using prior is advertised to reduce pores and sebum flow, and to be anti-shine and mattifying). I also used this as a PM moisturizer and found that my skin remained hydrated throughout the night.

Although I am not sure I will disregard all moisturizers I have used before (nor can I say that I will refrain from trying new products on the market), I can safely say that since I’ve been re-introduced to the world of¬†gel moisturizers, I don’t know if I could return back to cream moisturizers. Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Drink of H20 Hydrating Boost really provides a boost of hydration to my skin and feels refreshing and light. Not to mention, this gel is packed with anti-oxidants.

Currently, Rainforest of the Sea Drink Of H2O Hydrating Boost is only available either at Tarte.com, Sephora stores, or on Sephora.com.

Mindful Eating 101

heart-980894_1920.jpg

Mindfulness is¬†the ability to be as fully present in the moment as possible without wishing or trying to make it different. In our hectic lives, we often function on¬†‚Äúautopilot mode,‚ÄĚ floating from one activity to another without even thinking about what we are doing, predisposed by and preoccupied with the past which is long gone¬†and/or a future that is¬†not guaranteed. Eating is one of the activities that we usually rush through and often engage in without being aware of what, how, where and why we are eating.

Enter: Mindful Eating – the intentional act of eating, which¬†requires ¬†paying full attention to the experiences of eating and drinking, both inside and outside of the body. This requires being fully aware of and noticing the plentitude of sensations – colours, aromas, flavours, textures, temperatures, and even the sounds – associated¬†with eating and drinking. Furthermore, Mindful Eating¬†requires being conscious¬†of how drinking and eating interact with our minds and our bodies, so as to produce feelings of hunger/satiation/satisfaction etc… Therefore, it is¬†critical¬†to pay attention to how drinking and¬†eating affect our feelings, thoughts and behaviours, as well as,¬†vice versa.

There are many reported benefits of Mindful eating, however I will only touch on a few of the main ones. Firstly, Mindful eating allows us to enjoy the experiences of eating and drinking, which is a pleasure that is natural and should be celebrated at every opportunity and meal. When I was first introduced to Mindful Eating, it not only transformed my eating and drinking experiences (because¬†it felt as if I upgraded to a new sensorial level, which I was likely always privileged to, but which I forfeited by default when I gave into distractions!), but by¬†choosing to be conscious and aware,¬†with regards to my eating and drinking, rather than distracted by watching TV or talking on the phone simultaneously, I was able¬†to¬†regain a sense of control, vis-a-vis my¬†drinking and eating habits, which then contributed further to¬†healthier eating habits (which are almost never driven by emotions, habits or “auto-pilot mode” anymore!).

I will write more about Mindful Eating as soon as I can but for now, here are some:

Mindful Eating Exercises to Get You Started

1 ) Eat a Chocolate Almond Mindfully (or you can choose an equivalent sized food item):

As you begin this exercise, imagine that this is the first time in your life that you have ever encountered a chocolate almond.

Hold the chocolate almond between your index finger and thumb.  Move the chocolate almond between your fingers (careful not to let it melt), exploring its texture. Then close your eyes for 15 seconds and notice any changes you experience in your sense of touch as you continue to move the chocolate almond between your fingers.

Now open your eyes and¬†take time to really look at and focus on the chocolate almond. Explore every part of it as you move it around your fingers, noticing any remarkable characteristics, where the light reflects on it, its rich brown colour etc….

Then bring the chocolate almond 1-2 inches away from under your nose. Take 2-3 deep inhalations and with each inhalation, draw in the aroma of the chocolate almond. Pay attention to anything different that may occur in your mouth or in your stomach as you take in the fragrance.

Now,¬†slowly bring the chocolate almond up to your mouth. Take a moment, be AMAZED¬†at how your hand and arm work together to find exactly how and where to place the chocolate almond, even if/when your eyes are closed! Place¬†the¬†chocolate almond¬†in your¬†mouth, but don’t take a bite¬†yet! Notice¬†the sensations of having it in your mouth, and then explore it with your tongue.

When you’re ready to chew the chocolate almond, take a moment to notice how and where it needs to be positioned in your mouth in order for you to chew it. Take the first bite very consciously and take a moment before the next bite to assess¬†the sensations in your body. Experience¬†the¬†taste that emanates and then continue to chew slowly and notice any sounds. Before you swallow, notice the taste and texture in your mouth and how they have changed over time, as well as physical changes in the chocolate almond as you chewed it. When you are ready to swallow, see if you can detect the intention to swallow when it arises so that you are consciously swallowing the chocolate almond rather. Notice and feel¬†what is left of the chocolate almond as it moves down your throat and then into your stomach. Take a moment to reflect on how your¬†body feels after completing this exercise as well as any thoughts that may have arisen as you completed the exercise in mindful eating.

2) Commit to eating an entire meal alone, in silence without any distractions. Practise the strategies in 1) and then at the end of your meal, reflect on how this experience was similar to and different from the experience you had while eating the meal before the one you ate alone, in silence and without any distractions. If you want, you can read or watch TV but make sure to alternate taking bites mindfully and reading a paragraph/page or watching a few minutes mindfully rather than simultaneously engaging in both activities.

3) At your next family meal, suggest that everyone begin the meal by eating in silence for the first 5-10 minutes. Encourage everyone to acknowledge the meal that is being offered and the efforts required for it to be made available for everyone to enjoy in addition to paying attention to their senses as they consume their food and beverages in silence. You can even debrief what this experience felt like after the designated time period ends or save it for dessert!

Good luck on your practise and please feel free to comment on your experiences below ūüôā

Review: Bare Minerals GEN NUDE Matte Liquid Lipcolor

img_4330

I was at Sephora the other day and redeemed 100 of my points to pick up this reward: Bare Minerals GEN Nude Matte Liquid Lipcolor in the shade called Swag.

fullsizerender

As soon as I opened the bottle and moved the application wand towards my nose, I fell in LOVE with the scent of baked goods that instantly fluttered through my nostrils and flooded my senses. But, it wasn’t until I tried this liquid lipcolor¬†on (and kept it on) that I fell in love with the amazing product that it truly was!

img_4360
Before I provide my detailed review of this product, let me share some info that bareMinerals has noted on its website with regards to it (Please note I am NOT being paid or endorsed by anyone to share my review).

The bareMinerals website¬†states that GEN MATTE Liquid Lip Color was formulated in¬†20 nude liquid lip colours that come in¬†4 finishes, therefore providing “countless ways to go nude”.

Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lip Colors are supposed to “compliment every skin tone and lip tone, whether you want an edgy, blanked-out nude look, a natural your-lips-but-better nude, or a deeper neutral contrast color, you’re guaranteed to find shades for any look. Blend and layer colors and finishes for infinite ways to go nude”. The product is Primer-infused so that it shoud give “a gorgeous soft focus effect, and helps with transfer resistance; helps prevent feathering/bleeding” and contains¬†Plant-based waxes so it should feel¬†“moisturizing feel on lips”.¬†This lip color is also reportedly¬†gluten-free, was not tested on animals and is made without petrolatum,¬†parabens, sulfates or phthalates.

Manufacturer’s Suggested Usage Instructions

  • Apply with the paddle applicator for full-coverage color in one sweep, or use the slim end of the Double-Ended Perfect Fill Lip Brush for a more precise application
  • Finish your look: Use Gen Nude Under Over Lip Liner before or after lipcolor to create more definition around the edges
  • For best results, wait 10 minutes before eating or drinking to allow the color to set

I was certainly pleased with the overall look of this product when I applied it with lip primer and lip liner (Not bareMinerals brand), and found that this product fared well in standing the tests of time and talking, in that it did not crease or flake. However, there was nothing to be seen or found on my lips other than lip liner after I drank and ate dinner, despite my best efforts to drink with a straw and to eat without touching my lips with the food I was eating. Nonetheless, I am a fan of this product and will definitely buy the regular 4 mL size when I runs out of Swag, although I am not sure about trying out other colours unless bareMinerals offers a set with various minis, which always takes some of the commitment-fear out of trying new shades and products for me.

Let me know what you think if you’ve tried this product.

Everything you Ever Wanted to Know about GINGER!

ginger-1432262_1920.jpg

Ginger is a spice native to southeastern Asia, a region whose cuisines frequently feature this aromatic and distinctly tasting herb. The flesh of ginger can be yellow, white or red in color and it is covered with a brownish skin. Ginger has been mentioned in ancient Chinese, Indian and Middle Eastern literature, and has been admired for its culinary as well as medicinal properties.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Ginger has been considered at being effective in alleviating symptoms of various health conditions as well as in preventing others.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects:¬†Ginger contains anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols¬†(responsible for ginger’s distinctive flavor) which are believed to help reduce pain and improve mobility for individuals suffering¬†from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis (when consumed regularly).

Gastrointestinal Relief: Some studies indicate that ginger is  effective in preventing the symptoms of motion sickness, including dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and cold sweating.

Immune Boosting: Ginger is not only thought to be heat-causing but to also promote sweating, which is helpful when you are battling a fever. Sweating not only facilitates detoxification but, according to recent research, also fights off infections.

Safe and Effective Relief of Morning Sickness: Ginger  has been demonstrated to be very useful in reducing the symptoms of morning sickness (nausea and vomiting), even in its most severe form, hyperemesis gravidum,  which can require hospitalization. BONUS: Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, ginger is natural and safe.

Protection against Colorectal Cancer: Gingerols are believed to inhibit the growth of human colorectal cancer cells

Promotes Death of Ovarian Cancer Cells: Gingerols are thought to kill ovarian cancer cells.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • Fresh ginger is preferable to dried ginger as it contains higher levels of gingerol.
  • When purchasing fresh ginger, make sure it is firm and free of mould.
  • Ginger is generally available in two forms, either young or mature. Mature ginger has a tough skin and¬†requires peeling while young ginger does not need to be peeled.
  • Fresh ginger can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three weeks if it is left unpeeled. Stored unpeeled in the freezer, it will keep for up to six months.
  • Dried ginger powder should be kept in a tightly sealed glass container in a cool, dark and dry place. Alternatively, you can store it in the refrigerator where it will enjoy a shelf life of about one year (To store ginger for an even longer period of time, you can¬†peel it and cover it with vodka prior to storing).¬†
  • ¬†The taste that ginger imparts to a dish depends upon when it is added during the cooking process. When ginger is added at the beginning, it will lend a subtler flavor while added near the end, it will deliver a more pungent taste.
  • You can easily peel ginger by tilting a spoon to its side and scraping down the root.
  • Add extra pizzaz¬†to your rice side dishes by sprinkling grated ginger, sesame seeds and seaweed¬†on top.
  • Spice up saut√©ed vegetables by adding freshly minced ginger.

Vegan Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream

pumpkin-1031112_1920

I have been coming across various recipes for yummy Pumpkin based dishes over the last few days and since Fall is in the air, I couldn’t help but ¬†begin experimenting¬†with¬†Vegan Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream. I found various recipes online which I tested out before I settled on the recipe below to share with you all.
I had a friend over the other day and he was beyond amazed that this “ice cream” contained¬†no dairy or animal products. For those of you who are not vegan, feel free to substitute with non-vegan¬†products (which I have listed below) but keep in mind that this will likely result in¬†a different consistency of ice cream.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1.5 cups raw cashews (Soak in warm water for 4-6 hours, or in boiling hot water for 1-2 hours)
  • 1 cup light coconut or almond¬†milk
  • 3/4 cup Pumpkin puree
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1.5 Tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup¬†or honey
  • 1/3¬†Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 Tsp sea salt
  • 1.5 Tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 3/4 Tsp ground cinnamon
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Soak  cashews  for 4-6 hours in warm water. You can also soak them in boiling water for 1-2 hours.
  2. Once soaked, add cashews and remaining ingredients to a blender and blend until creamy and smooth. Taste and modify flavors as required.
  3. Add mixture to a freezer-safe pan and freeze until hard and chilled (at least 4-6 hours but preferably overnight).
  4. Remove pan from the freezer and thaw for 30-40 minutes before serving. Serve with brown sugar roasted pecans or almonds.

ROASTED PECANS/ALMONDS: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place 1/2 cup of pecans or almonds on a foil-lined baking sheet and toast for +/- 8 minutes. Melt 1 Tbsp (vegan or not) butter in a skillet and stir in 1 Tbsp brown sugar, pinch each of sea salt, cinnamon and cayenne pepper. Remove toasted pecans or almonds from oven, toss with butter/spice mixture and then spread nuts back onto the baking sheet and toast for another 5-9 minutes (until fragrant and golden brown).

You can store the unused portion of ice cream in the freezer for up to a week.
