The benefits of drinking water have been much discussed in the media. Water helps keep you hydrated, which is important because every single cell in your body needs it in order to absorb nutrients and expel waste products. But what are some of the less well known benefits of drinking water?
1)     Water is the only liquid on Earth that safely assists weight (fat) loss. Water assists the body to remove the by-products of fat in addition to suppressing your appetite to a great extent, thereby limiting your food intake. Another distinct feature of water is that it contains no calories, thereby making it a great tool in the battle against losing fat! Regular intake of water increases your metabolic rate and improves your digestive system. Drinking plenty of water also prevents fluid retention, because your body won’t try to retain water if it’s getting enough. Drinking water also helps your body burn stored fat. If you’re not drinking enough water, your liver will be forced to help your kidneys detoxify your body. When you drink plenty of water, your kidneys don’t need any extra help, so your liver will be able to metabolize stored fat more efficiently. Drinking water flushes toxins from your body.

2)     Furthermore, research suggests that drinking substantial amounts of water is likely to reduce the risks of bladder and colon cancer since water has the ability to dilute the concentration of cancer-causing agents in the urine and reduce the time they take to come in contact with the bladder lining.

3)     If you are constipated, try drinking more water – it can treat and prevent constipation.

4)     Water is great for your skin. If you don’t drink enough water, you’ll suffer from dry skin, and you’ll be likely to use more creams and lotions to moisturize, even though creams and lotions don’t alleviate the root of the problem. Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin moisturized and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you don’t drink enough water, your body will try to retain it in order to conserve resources. This retention makes your skin puffy and can even lead to bloating. As such, Water is a perfect replacement for your expensive ageing treatments. It moisturises your skin and keeps it fresh and glistening thereby enhancing its overall appeal. In addition, it helps maintain the elasticity and suppleness of the skin and prevents dryness by detoxifying the skin. Inversely, try to avoid dehydrating foods and beverages such as caffeine (cola, chocolate, coffee, tea) and alcohol. Additionally, Drinking water has been known to alleviate skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, dry skin, wrinkles and spots.

5)     Since most of our body is comprised of water, water is an essential component required for the effective working of our body. Water is also known to significantly improve our ability to think and make us energetic as well.

6)     Water removes toxins and most of the waste products from our body, thereby contributing to a healthy quality of life. If our body lacks water then our heart has to make an extra effort to pump fresh oxygenated blood to our organs causing severe health issues. Some research has suggested that those who drink sufficient water throughout the day are less likely to have a heart attack.

7)     Water helps to relieve back pain and headaches, considering  dehydration is one of the most common cause of headaches.

8)     Another benefit of drinking water is that it makes your muscles stronger. That’s because water carries oxygen to the cells of your body, including those of your muscles. Drinking plenty of water enables your muscles to work harder and longer before they feel tired, and this can help you build muscle.

9)     Drinking plenty of water helps fight against the flu and other ailments like kidney stones. Water, along with lemon or lemon juice is often used to overcome respiratory diseases, intestinal problems, rheumatism and arthritis. Water plays a fundamental role in strengthening your immune system.

10)  The human body needs a neutral Ph 7 range in order to function properly. Drinking enough water throughout the day helps maintain this balance.

11)  Drinking water can increase your cognitive function. Your brain needs a lot of oxygen in order to function at optimum levels. Drinking plenty of water ensures that your brain gets all the oxygen it needs. Drinking eight to ten cups of water per day can improve your levels of cognitive performance!  Drinking plenty of water also supports nerve function. It ensures that your body’s electrolyte levels remain high enough to allow your nerves to relay messages to and from the brain in the way they were meant to.

12)  One of the lesser known benefits of drinking water is that it helps keep your joints strong, healthy and lubricated. Your joints need moisture in order to remain strong and flexible, so that your movements are smooth and pain free.

    • I find its more enjoyable to drink water if I add fruits (berries, citrus) or veggies (cucumber) or herbs (mint) to my water. I also love herbal teas (available at Teavana and David’s Tea, as well as many other places) which I steep and then refrigerate. Not only does this make water taste better but I find that it makes it easter to remember to drink it more often!
